Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI

Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI is a greatest hits album released by Dead or Alive in 2016 on Edsel Records and Demon Records. It contains all the original studio albums of the band remastered, from the album Sophisticated Boom Boom to Fragile, it also includes classic remixes, exclusive, unpublished, songs and unpublished versions. It also includes songs by Pete Burns in solo. In addition to these 17 CDs of audio, Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI comes with two DVDs – one full of promo videos and the other featuring a 1987 concert (Rip It Up Live in Japan) and a selection of UK TV appearances (including Top of the Pops, The Kenny Everett Television Show and Blue Peter).

The set is packaged as a deluxe casebound book and features a 4,000 words of sleeve notes from Pete Burns himself. Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI will also be available as a 10 LP vinyl box set  featuring the eight studio albums.

Curated by frontman Pete Burns and drummer/keyboard player Steve Coy, the set comprises eight albums, three of which (Fan The Flame (Part 1), Nukleopatra and Fragile) receive their UK debut release via this set (with new cover art).

The first four albums issued in the 1980s all feature here as two-CD sets, except 1985’s Stock Aitken Waterman produced Youthquake (which spawned the mega-hit You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) – which is a three-disc package. So this box delivers the original album track listings for each long-player, plus plenty of rarities, live recordings, alternate mixes and instrumental versions. In fact, it also contains 12 previously unreleased remixes and tracks from the band’s vaults. 1987 greatest hits album Rip It Up is also present and correct (as a two-CD set)

Curiosities:[]

  • An unpublished official recording of a concert of the band (Youthquake Tour) is published for the first time, although some live tracks of that concert were already included in some singles of "Youthquake" and "Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know".
  • The music video for "Total Stranger" is included although it was not finished completely, or maybe it was but it was in private.
  • The song "Why's It So Hard" in this compilation is an extended version that has never been released before. This version was used by Pete during one of his solo performances in 1998.
  • Before the death of Pete Burns, Edsel and Demon conducted an interview about this compilation.
  • According to Steve Coy (drummer of the band), there is the possibility of releasing a second compilation box of this, which would include unpublished albums by Dead or Alive.

CD Boxset & Vinyl Boxset Mistakes:[]

  • The 1995 version for Nukleopatra of the song "Unhappy Birthday" was never included. Also, a demo of this remix (made in 1994) was going to be included, but it was never part of the boxset. However, the demo is available on YouTube.
  • The Heavy Metal Version of "Unhappy Birthday" is originally the Ninja Billy Mix
  • "Fan the Flame (feat. Gina X)" was not included in the new vinyl version of the album "Fan the Flame (Part 1)"
  • The song "Jack and Jill Party" by Pete Burns with Pet Shop Boys was not included in the vinyl with exclusive songs.
  • In the new CD and Vinyl versions of "Fragile" the original Japanese version of "Even Better Than the Real Thing" and "My Heart Goes Bang" was not included.
  • Also the original Japanese versions of "Turn Around and Count To Ten" and "Something in My House" by Fragile were not included.
  • A few days after the release of the CD box set, several errors were discovered in the songs in 10 of the 19 discs that are the following:
  • On disc 1 (Sophisticated Boom Boom - CD 1), on "I'd Do Anything", it finishes with an extra “do do do” which sounds odd on play back.
  • On disc 2 (Sophisticated Boom Boom - CD 2), on "What I Want (1984 Dance Mix)", it plays the same as Track 2 ‘Original Dance Mix’, and on "That's the Way (I Like It) [Dub]", it plays the same as Track 12 – ‘Keep That Body Strong (That’s The Way)’.
  • On disc 3 (Youthquake - CD 1), all the album plays in Mono Audio, and on "My Heart Goes Bang (7" Version)" plays the same as album version
  • On disc 4 (Youthquake - CD 2), all the album plays in Mono Audio, and on "You Spin Me Round (Big Ben Mix)", it sounds like it’s a reconstruction, using a clean intro (lifted from the Performance Mix), and a clean 7″ single version, with the bells/chimes in between coming from a crackly vinyl source.
  • On disc 6 (Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know - CD 1), there is an awkward gap between ‘Then There Was You’ and ‘Come Inside’ on the original album sequence, and in "Brand New Lover (Edit)" appears to be slower than any other version.
  • On disc 8 (Rip it Up - CD 1), on "Something in My House (Short Version)", it should be an edit of the album version but plays the 7″ remix.
  • On disc 12 (Fan the Flame [Part 1]), it's about ‘Fan The Flame’ (feat. Gina X) / Track 2 ‘Unhappy Birthday’. Steve Coy included this version of ‘Fan The Flame’, as it was previously unreleased and acts as an opening prelude for the album, which was re-sequenced. Track 1 now segues seamlessly into Track 2 ‘Unhappy Birthday’, which was the original Track 2 on the 1990 Japanese release.
  • On disc 14 (Nukleopatra - CD 2), tracks 1 and 6 ‘Rebel Rebel’ are exactly the same (they should be different mixes). Track 12 should be ‘International Thing’ (NU-NRG 12″ Remix) but plays the album version. And Track 6 is ‘The Hole Mix’, whereas Track 1 is an earlier shorter version of that mix. Track 1 and 6 are identical up until 6:10-ish. Track 1 has an “UGH!” at this point and ends abruptly. Track 6 has no “UGH!”, and starts to fade out instead… so they’re the same mixes, with very slight differences to the endings.
  • On disc 18 and 19 (Promotional Videos - Live Concert - T.V. Performances) [DVD 1 & 2] there are cropped, freezing issues.
